KT selects Harmonic for dual satellite distribution with terrestrial IP backup services

Also offers encryption capabilities to secure content for both distribution paths

By CBR Staff Writer

Harmonic said that KT, an integrated telecommunications company in Korea, has deployed its Ellipse 1000 contribution encoder, ProView 2900 integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) and network management system for distribution of primary and backup broadcast channels to over 160 cable operators nationwide.

The deployment is expected to enable KT to provide secure satellite distribution with terrestrial IP backup services, and deliver additional channels, facilitating content contribution and maximising bandwidth utilisation.

Sangku Chang, director at KT, said: Harmonic’s solutions provide us with the solid foundation in which to grow our business and further enhance services to our customers. With Harmonic’s superior and versatile technology, we are able to build upon our legacy systems to create an end-to-end solution for contribution and distribution applications, so we can continue to offer state-of-the-art services now and in the future.

According to Harmonic, the Ellipse 1000 encoder for fixed contribution allows KT to broadcast the same content to both satellite and terrestrial distribution paths, in variable bit-rate (VBR) for satellite distribution and constant bit-rate (CBR) for terrestrial distribution.

In addition, it also provides KT with encryption capabilities to secure content for both distribution paths. The Ellipse 1000’s encoding technology and bandwidth efficiency is expected to give KT option to add more channels in the future.

ProView 2900 IRD is a broadcast-quality decoder, decryptor and interface converter that provides MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) standard definition decoding, advanced transport stream processing, IP processing technologies and a variety of front-ends, including DVB-S2 and MPEG over IP, the company said.

Nimrod Ben-Natan, vice president of product marketing, solutions and strategy for Harmonic, said: Harmonic’s Ellipse 1000 and ProView 2900 provide KT with a cost-effective platform that builds upon their legacy systems to deliver significant operational efficiencies and advantages. KT’s selection of our Ellipse and ProView products, following our acquisition of Scopus Video Networks earlier this year, further demonstrates our growing momentum in the contribution and distribution sector.
