The video campaign aimed at making Joseph Kony a household name became viral last trended on Twitter using the hashtag #STOPKONY on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The non-profit group, Invisible Children, launched the social video campaign to increase United States involvement in fighting against the LRA. The LRA is notorious for abducting children as child sex slaves and soldiers.
Kony was indicted for war crimes in 2005 by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, but has managed to evade capture.
Kony has outpaced other record-setting viral videos, according to Visible Measures.
The video has generated over 112 million views; over 75m from YouTube and around 38m from clips uploaded by users across the internet.
The video is the first ever to reach over 100m views mark in less than a week.
Some videos that have seen the same popularity in passing 100m in a short amount of time are Susan Boyle in 9 days, Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance in 18, and Rebecca Black’s Friday in 45. The Kony video passed the 100m mark in six.
