KOKUSAI WANTS INTERNATIONAL LEASED LINE CHARGES REDUCED

By CBR Staff Writer

Kokusai Denshin Denwa is seeking permission from the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications to reduce international leased line charges by 22% to forestall possible criticism that charges in Japan are at least 25% higher than in the US – and that KDD’s profits are soaring as the yen continues to appreciate: the filing includes a request for a 10% cut in rates for the Venus-P packet-switched service, 28% for satellite communication rates, and 13% in international telephone rates, the requests also being spurred by the threat of serious competition from the two rival consortia when they start service in 1989 and the need to strengthen its base.
