Eastman Kodak Co is in alliance with John Sculley’s new charge, Live Picture Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co, Microsoft Corp, Canon Inc and others on a new file format for images to overcome some of the problems with the Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard. The claim is that the new file format will make it easier to work with high-resolution images on a computer and across the Internet without the use of extra memory, bigger hard disks or faster processors. It is said to draw on the IVUE format used on Live Picture’s photo workstations, which enables images to be stored and printed with resolution equal to print film but be processed quickly. IVUE is claimed to provide much improved contrast over JPEG.
