A Kickstarter campaign for 3D printer The Micro has already surpassed the $1.5million (£900,000) mark after two days.
Developed by M3D in Maryland, USA, The Micro is branding itself as "the most affordable 3D printer that can be used right out of the box".
Consumer 3D printers have been available on the market for a few years, with prices in the UK ranging from £400 to £5,000 depending on the make and model.
A series of open-source 3D printers called RepRap has also seen some success, being cheaper to build than professional models and capable of self-replicating.
The now closed introductory offer priced The Micro at $199, with the first run of production costing punters $299 without shipping.
It is unconfirmed whether this will reflect the price of the printers when they are put on general release next year.
Enthusiastic backers can opt to spend between $599 and $10,000 for a variety of privileges, including an office tour and meal with the production team for the highest bidders.
Weighing 1kg and measuring 18.5cm per side, The Micro will be compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux.
Though M3D will produce their own range of spools for use with the printer, it will be compatible with standard 1.75mm filament spools.
The package also comes with the company’s specially produced software for beginners, but will work with third-party software.
