Japan’s biggest international telecommunications carrier, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co Ltd said a planned undersea optic fiber optic cable around the main Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu will help it to lower further its international charges and enable it to achieve $2.70 per minute calls to the US before its target year 2000. It also said it would move into domestic call services after a law restricting its business to international services is amended, probably next summer. The cable will enable the company to cut its yearly access payments to Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp by $91m from the current $273m. Kokushai will invest $910m in the cable by 1999.
