VSNL, India’s international telecom carrier and the largest internet service provider is in negotiations with NIIT Ltd (India’s largest computer training company) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) for a deal that could result in a 40 per cent jump in the number of internet subscribers in the country. NIIT has requested VSNL for 20,000 accounts while Ignou has requested for 10,000 to 15,000 accounts. Both are discussing bulk discounts before signing the deals. The number of internet subscribers in the country has shot up by 25 per cent since January 1 this year from 60,000 subscribers to 80,000 since the beginning of the year because of tariff reductions.
