Yahoo co-founder and former chief executive Jerry Yang has resigned from its board.

Yang, who had founded the online company in 1995 along with David Filio, departs two weeks after the Yahoo board hired Paypal’s Scott Thomson as its new chief executive.

The former chief executive said in a statement that time had come for him to pursue interests outside of Yahoo and wished the company a successful future under the leadership of Scott Thompson.

Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock said the entire board will miss the vision and perspective that Yang held.

Yang also quit from the boards of Yahoo Japan and Alibaba Group.

Yang’s decision in 2008 to turn down a takeover offer by Microsoft valued at $47.5bn (£31bn) disappointed some of the company’s shareholders, which led him to vacate the chief executive post in favour of Carol Bartz, with whom Jerry was a fellow Board member of Cisco Systems.
