Jeeves said that it will use Google’s AdWords service, which allows advertisers to bid for ranking on a sponsored search results section of the portal. Google aggregates the advertisers and collects the clickthrough fees, sharing the revenue with its partners.

Jeeves, with its Teoma algorithmic search engine, competes with Google, but is believed to have signed up with its competitor anyway because it gets a higher percentage of the clickthrough fees than rivals, such as Overture Services Inc, offer.

Privately held Google does not disclose what percentage of the revenue it shares with portal partners such as Jeeves. Overture’s average payout in the fourth quarter 2002 was 62%, according to financial statements from the Nasdaq-listed firm.

Jeeves in the UK has been using Espotting, which offers a similar service to AdWords, since February last year. According to reports Friday, that deal is off. Jeeves UK claims to have 6.6 million unique pairs of eyeballs.
