Privately held Acterna, which makes broadband and optical test and measurement gear for network equipment makers, made more than $440m in revenue during the past year. The company, which has about 1,770 employees, will become JDS Uniphase’s Communications T&D product group, led by Acterna CEO John Peeler.

The acquisition broadens JDS’ sub-systems portfolio and would double the size of its communications addressable market to more than $5b, according to the company. It also will accelerate JDS’ path to profitability.

With the addition of Acterna, we believe our combined portfolio and global sales channel will improve our ability to serve our customers as they deploy next generation IP services, said JDS chief executive Kevin Kennedy, in a statement. The deal is expected to close by September 30.
