JBoss hopes the new division will make it easier for public sector groups to use its Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS), a product designed to avoid software lock-in and achieve interoperability.

The move comes as governments are starting to move toward open source applications in order to support critical applications. JBoss claims that one in 10 of its Enterprise Middleware System downloads come from government users, such as the US Defense Department and NASA.

Government agencies and programs have long been recognized as pioneers in implementing open source software because it’s extremely cost-effective over the entire application lifecycle when compared to proprietary products, explained Marc Fleury, CEO at JBoss.

In support of its new unit, the company plans to partner with public sector technology providers in the coming months.
