Sun Microsystems Inc is set to ship its Java Plug-in software on April 30. Previously know as Activator, it is designed to enable users of Internet Explorer and other browsers that may not include the latest version of Java to automatically download the latest Java virtual machine (JVM) from Sun’s site and use that. In doing so it bypasses any platform-specific Java libraries that browser vendors – i.e. Microsoft Corp – may have included in their JVM. Java Plug-in will be available free of charge on Windows 95, NT Solaris and eventually Macintosh. Apple Computer Inc yesterday committed to porting the software to its platform.
