By CBR Staff Writer

Sun Microsystems Inc says it will bring James Gosling, the inventor of the Java programming language to the high-tech metropolis of Hyderbad in May this year as part of its annual Sun Tech Days event.

Sun estimates that around half of the 600,000 software developers in India program on Sun’s Java language.

Industry analysts estimate there are three million Java developers worldwide using the language, out of an overall community of four million software developers. A range of computing devices, from chips to mobile phones, run on Java technology today.

Sun expects the number of Sun developers to surpass the four million mark by 2006.

Analysts also predict that by 2006 the number of Java-powered handsets is expected to pass PCs in a couple of years and that over 1.1bn mobile phones will run on Java.

While Web services dominates Java development, Sun is also eyeing the gaming industry as an untapped opportunity for development tools.

Sun’s Tech Days Event runs from May 20 to 21 and is billed as the biggest developer seminar in India. Over 3,000 developers are expected to be drawn to this year’s event which is themed as Turning Ideas into Innovation.
