JasperServer Professional effectively wrappers server-based ad hoc enterprise reporting and analysis capabilities around JasperSoft’s core JasperReports open source Java library and execution engine.

The open source version of JasperServer added things like integration to data sources, report storage and distribution and administration functions on top of the JasperReports code.

The Professional, which builds on the open source code version, goes further by adding richer production-class report layout and formatting tools for controlling data columns, groupings, summaries and labels.

Reports can be output natively in HTML, PDF, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and other formats. Users can drill-down on reports. Report scheduling, email distribution and report management tools are also included as part of the product.

Seamless upwards migration from open source to Professional versions of JasperServer is supported.

The software also integrates with the company’s JasperReports open source reporting tool since both are integrated into JasperSoft’s recently announced JasperIntelligence BI architecture.

JasperServer Professional is available under commercial license, meaning that customers have full access to all the source code in the product.

JasperSoft has also certified the software to run on third-party open source platforms including Apache Tomcat, JBoss Application Server, MySQL, RedHat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise.

It also supports BEA WebLogic Server, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Application Server, Oracle Database; IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Windows Server, Sun Solaris, and IBM AIX.

JasperServer Professional pricing starts at $2,500 for one year of support and licensing. Options are also available for broader support, severity-based response times, and indemnification.

JasperSoft now boasts over one million downloads and over 10,000 corporate deployments of its open source and commercially licensed BI products.

The company launched its JasperIntelligence architecture in April this year, as part of its roadmap for developing an integrated open source BI suite that includes reporting, analytics and data integration software components. In June the company added a new OLAP tool called JasperAnalysis to its existing reporting software line iReports, JasperReports and JasperServer.

The missing component is a data integration (ETL) component that JasperSoft is planning to introduce soon.
