JasperSoft says its JBoss Reporting Portal is the first open source technology integrated with the JBoss Application Server and Portal technologies. Java developers will now be able to use reporting portlets that can be run, viewed and managed into the JBoss Portal (or any other JSR-168-compliant portal) environment.
JapserSoft is a JBoss Open Source Federation member.
Easier integration between the two technologies will be useful to IT professionals looking to extend open source beyond the application server level, said Al Campa, founder and executive vice president at JasperSoft. Technologies like JasperReports and JBoss Portal are growing quickly for their ability to provide essential functionality at a very low cost of ownership.
Partnering with established open source technologies (like JBoss & MySQL) will help open source BI tools gain credibility in the mainstream IT.
JasperSoft’s integration play is part of an attempt by open source vendors to build up LAMP-like stack for business intelligence (BI). The company is making strides to ensure that JasperReports will work with any Java-based open source application. It recently launching a new DBA dashboard reporting product specifically for MySQL. Also partnering with Informatica to allow JasperDecisions to report off Informatica’s PowerCenter ETL platform.
JasperSoft and open source partners Greenplum Inc and Kinetic Networks Inc have also proposed an integrated BI architecture through the Bizgres community project which comprises ETL, reporting and data warehousing components.
The Pentaho BI Project is stewarding the development of open source reporting, OLAP, data mining, and workflow projects which can be rapidly configured into a comprehensive integrated BI stack. A partial list of the projects include: Mondrian OLAP, JPivot, Firebird RDBMS, Shark, Weka Data Mining, and Eclipse BIRT.
JBoss isn’t the only open source portal play. Jetspeed is another open source implementation of an enterprise information portal, using Java and XML.
Its certainly been a fruitful month for San Francisco-based JasperSoft which last week unveiled version 1.0 of its embeddable open source JasperReports reporting engine which boasts over 750,000 dowloads to date and 10,000 live customers across 50 countries worldwide.
