Japan’s domestic shipments of PCs were up by 40.4% year-on-year to 2.19 million units in the second-quarter of the year ending June 30 according to figures from MultiMedia Research Institute Inc. In value terms the PCs were worth 450bn yen ($3.85bn), a year-on-year gain of 27.6%. Shipments of desktop models with cathode-ray tube monitors grew by 23.6%, while shipments of desktop models with liquid-crystal monitors rose by 390%. Based on the April-June results, the institute expects fiscal 1999’s total domestic shipments of PCs to reach 9 million units. NEC Corp held onto the top market share at 30.1% while Fujitsu Ltd was in second place with 18%.
