Renesas Electronics America will sell its semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Roseville, California, to Telefunken Semiconductors International, for approximately $53m, under a new agreement.

Renesas Electronics America is a subsidiary of Japan-based Renesas Electronics Corp, while Telefunken Semiconductors International is part of German-based Telefunken Semiconductors GmbH & Co.

Renesas Electronics has been considering and implementing various measures, such as promoting larger wafers, finer process node, and production concentration, to improve manufacturing efficiency of the facility.

These efforts are part of the strategies decided through its 100-Day Project announced on 29 July 2010.

Telefunken Semiconductors International intends to utilise the 200-millimeter (mm), eight-inch line at the Renesas factory to manufacture its own analog/mixed-signal, HV products and the products for its strategic foundry partners.

Telefunken will also enter into a supply agreement with Renesas Electronics for manufacturing services at the Roseville factory.

Under this agreement, Telefunken Semiconductors International will focus on Renesas Electronics’ current customers without interruption for the same high-quality level of production and service at the Roseville facility.

The sale is planned to be complete by 2 may 2011.
