The Japanese subsidiaries of Compaq Computer Corp and Tandem Computers Inc now say they will follow the lead of their US parents and merge in January, after previously agreeing that they would maintain separate operations. Details, such as the name and the location of the new headquarters, have yet to be decided. The merger is being carried out in the hopes that the combined units can further penetrate the Japanese personal computer and corporate data processing markets, currently dominated by the likes of NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd.
