NTT plans to launch a service based around the platform in September when it is hoped it will boost subscriber growth of DoCoMo FOMA 3G service, which has so far failed to attract as many subscribers as the Tokyo, Japan-based telecoms giant had expected. Applications for a trial service are now being taken.
Meanwhile, DoCoMo rival KDDI Corp is in talks with Qualcomm Inc about offering a mobile-to-mobile teleconferencing service based on Qualcomm’s Brew (binary runtime environment for wireless) handset technology.
San Diego, California-based Qualcomm said its QChat push-to-talk application, which runs on the Brew virtual machine, should be ready for launch by the end of June. The company is also known to be porting Brew to PDA environments for the first time. Tokyo, Japan-based KDDI launches its first package of Brew applications and services to users at the end of next month.
