Dick Gephardt (see story on page 5) will no doubt say that it’s a damn sight cheaper to hand out awards to US companies than actually to buy anything from them, but they’re feeling chirpy enough about it at CDC’s ETA Systems Inc up there in chilly St Paul, Minnesota: the Nippon Keizai Shimbun newspaper has named the ETA-10 family of supercomputers one of the 17 best new products introduced in Japan during 1987, beating the machines from locals Hitachi Ltd, NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd to win the citation.
