IBM Japan is to cooperate with Sharp Corp, Toshiba Corp, and Hitachi Ltd in developing a Digital PV Link interface standard for connecting PCs with LCD displays by packet transfer. Because Digital PV Link is an interface protocol standard, existing digital interface standards such as transition minimized differential signaling, low voltage differential signaling and gigabit video interface do not need to be modified for it, the companies said in a joint statement.
Rather than setting up a special organization for development, the companies will convene meetings to discuss issues studied by each party. The development will proceed openly, so no other group is excluded from participating, although the four companies will continue leading the development, the statement said.
The four companies expect to be able to propose the new standard to organizations such as the Video Electronics Standards Association, Digital Display Working Group and Digital Interface Standards for Monitors by the middle of next year.
