JAPANESE FIRMS BUILD EQUITY STAKE IN US COMPANIES

Japanese firms are quietly building equity stakes in US electronics companies, in most cases choosing small firms with low visibility rather than making controversial moves for high profile companies, and now Matsushita Electric Industrial Co has bought a considerable stake in US venture start-up SAE Inc, location unknown, with which it has a joint venture to develop a 64-bit supermini; Matsushita has provided the company with $10m in research and development funds, and is thought to have a 52% holding.
