The International Telecommunications Japan consortium led by Mitsui & Co and Mitsubishi Corp has applied to the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications for permission to lower its rates for international telephone calls so as to make them 20% lower than those charged by Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co: service is due to start in April, initially to the US, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, to be followed later by services to UK and France, and then Australia, Taiwan and West Germany; International Digital Communications, led by C Itoh & Co and Cable & Wireless Plc is expected to make a similar filing soon, triggering a price war to the benefit of users.
