A group of 180 Japanese companies and organisations including Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp came together on Friday to launch experiments in interactive multimedia services: the $75m experiment in the city of Kyoto will last for two years and is intended to develop applications for Japan’s planned information superhighway, which is intended to be completed by 2010; the group will conduct 17 experiments, including remote education, home shopping and an electronic library using high-speed, high-capacity fibre optic networks; first results will be revealed at the meeting of the International Telecommunication Union, which is due to open in Kyoto on September 19.
