Japan Telecom to sell ADSL network

Japan Telecom has agreed to sell its consumer ADSL network to eAccess Ltd. The deal worth Y5 billion ($44 million) will make eAccess Japan's largest CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) in terms of the number of ADSL subscribers.

In exchange for acquiring the ADSL transmission network and retail customer base, eAccess will provide wholesale ADSL services to Japan Telecom’s ODN consumer ISP services.

The deal forms part of Japan Telecom’s strategy of withdrawing from retail sales of fixed line telecom services and concentrating on the corporate and wholesale markets. The company announced the strategy in April, after Vodafone gained control of the company.
