The Japanese government is not going to back down on its opposition to 100% punitive tariff imposed by the US on selected electronic imports in retaliation for alleged failure of Japan to live up to the chip pact: the Japanese side in the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs & Trade insists that the impost is in violation of the GATT rules; the outburst had no effect and the US side at the talks countered that the tariff would be retained until it is convinced that Japan has complied with the pact.
