The Japan Electronic Industry Development Association has published figures for sales of personal computers manufactured in Japan during the fiscal first – April to June – quarter: the overall trend was for rising domestic growth but a sharp drop in both quantity and value of exports to North America with the actual figures showing 428,000 machines sold, 101% of the figure for the same period of 1986, valued at $1,100m, 111% of last year’s value; sales in Japan were $817m dollars, up 24% from last year, 43% of this processors, 38% peripherals; and sales of display units increased markedly since 1986; exports were 162,000 units, valued at $283m, peripherals were only 72% of the 1986 figure, with printers crashing to 49% of of total exports; exports to North America were only 72% of last year’s first quarter figure, thanks to retaliatory tariffs, but exports to South America, South East Asia, and Oceania increased by 200% to 300% over last year, while exports to Europe were static.
