JAPAN PRICE ACTION IN VIOLATION OF THE GATT CODE

The Council of the General Agreement on Tariffs & Trade has approved the ruling of one of its panels, made in March, that Japan’s monitoring of the price of semiconductor exports, introduced to ensure compliance of Japanese firms with the terms of the US-Japan semiconductor accord, is in violation of the GATT code: Japan says that it will end the practice objected to as soon as possible, without giving details of what it will do instead.
