Cambridge, England-based Santa Cruz Operation Inc subsidiary IXI Ltd has leaked plans for the second version of its WinTif Windows look-alike X.desktop manager, due in the autumn. The firm, which launched the development kit for version 1.0 in February, originally promised Object Linking & Embedding functionality in a user version to ship in the summer. There will now be no new version until the autumn, and this will include only partial Object Linking & Embedding functionality according to Ray Anderson, managing director of the firm. IXI will be taking advantage of the Internet, though, by including core code from the University of Illinois’ Mosaic product, which has been licensed by Santa Cruz Operation. IXI says this will enable X users to exchange information over the Internet using WinTif residing on their servers.
