Italian domestic telephone operator Societa Italiana per l’Exercizio delle Telecomunicazioni SpA – SIP – reports that the Italian government has now cleared the way for restructuring the industry with the creation of a new umbrella Telecom Italia SpA company: the government has transferred the only telecommunications company controlled by the Ministry of Post & Telecommunications, Azienda di Stato per i Servizi Telefonici, or ASST, to Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale, IRI, which already controls all the other telecommunications companies; ASST will now be called Iritel; it is the long distance operator responsible for the Mediterranean region; Telecom Italia will be a single service operator including SIP, Iritel, intercontinental operator Italcable SpA, radio and electronics company Societa Italiana Radio Marittima SpA, and satellite firm Telespazio SpA.
