ISRAEL’s CELLULAR PHONE NETWORK ATRACTS 18 COMPANIES

By CBR Staff Writer

Israel’s communication ministry reports that 18 companies, including BellSouth Corp and Southwestern Bell Corp, have expressed interest in bidding on a tender that will open the country’s cellular telephone service to competition: the cellular phone service in Israel is currently a monopoly operated by Motorola Israel in partnership with Israeli telecommunications company Bezeq but under the terms of the tender, foreign companies can hold up to 80% of any bidding team; the winner will be announced in three months and analysts estimate that an investment of $75m to $130m will be needed for the national network.
