IS NT 5.0 UP FOR NEW NAME AND RELEASE DATE?

By CBR Staff Writer

The much anticipated next version of WindowsNT could get a new name and an earlier release date. According to Infoworld, the on-line technology magazine, officials at Microsoft are considering dropping the NT affix – which stands for ‘New Technology’ – as it will no longer be needed to differentiate it from the other Windows9x operating system line of which Windows98 is to be the last. The names under consideration are: Windows Professional or Pro, and Windows 2000. Speculation currently favors a year 2000 release date, with full deployment not expected to be possible until 2001. Infoworld suggests that the release date may now be brought forward to June next year, with an announcement in March.
