The Iridium LLC mobile phone consortium has launched a further five satellites, bringing the total number of satellites launched so far to 39 (CI No 3,257). The move marks the latest stage in a project to build a global wireless communications network combining 66 low earth orbit satellites with land-based wireless systems. Once the satellites are in position the company will move to test various aspects of the system including intersatellite links and subscriber equipment. Iridium plans to launch its phone, data and fax service next year.
