The Khrunichev space centre, a state-owned Russian manufacturer of aerospace technology, and Zond-Svyaz, a satellite communications company, have teamed up to establish the Iridium-Eurasia company to offer commercial telecommunications services. The company will use the Motorola Inc-led Iridium global satellite and wireless-based mobile telecommunications system (CI No 2,667) to reach customers in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The founders of Iridium-Eurasia are planning an Iridium earthstation, which will be built by Motorola Satcom, that will provide a link-up between the system and available terrestrial telephone networks.
