The delayed launch of Iridium LLC’s new satellites took place on Thursday, taking the total number to 22 out of 66 (CI No 3,230). The launch was the first by Boeing Space Systems, the new company formed by the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing on August 1, 1997. The five satellites will be maneuvered into position for testing intersatellite links to land-based wireless systems.
