French swimwear maker Spinali Design has introduced an Internet of Things based bikini, that protects the wearer against too much UV exposure by prompting them to apply sunscreen or to move into shade.

The two-piece or one-piece bikini can be custom designed from the company’s website, and includes a small sensor that can be attached to the bikini.

The sensor can also be connected to a smartphone, which can send a "sun screen alert" depending upon the skin type of the wearer and how much tan they want.

It also has a valentine function that sends an alert to the wearer’s partner or boyfriend about the time for more sun screen application.

The company is also offering a beach towel, with a kids variant of the swimsuit in development which will provide GPS alerts to parents that will help them keep track of their kids.

AFP cited Spinali Design head Marie Spinali as saying: "The idea came to me right away, on a day when I saw someone get sunburnt on a beach."

Spinali is reportedly working with French researchers in nanotechnology to introduce a smaller UV sensor that would be part of the bikini itself.
