IONA ON TOP OF ORB PILE, SAYS IDC

Market researcher says Dublin, Ireland-based Iona Technologies Ltd grabbed 30% of the worldwide market for object request broker products in 1996, up from a 21% share in 1995. IDC estimates the value of the worldwide market for object middleware will grow to $705m by the year 2001; $438m in the US; $154m in Europe; $91m in Asia; and $23m in the rest of the world. Telecommunications software supplier TCSI Corp, Berkeley, California was said to have 21% of the 1996 ORB market; BEA Systems Inc and its Objectbroker technology (formerly owned by DEC) had 16% and VisiBroker from Visigenic Software Inc held 11% in 1996.
