Irish object-oriented middleware ISV Iona Technologies Ltd is jumping into the bespoke EAI market by licensing Visual Edge Technology Ltd’s connector software. Iona believes there is significant revenue to be made linking SAP R/3 and other enterprise applications to in-house and e-business programs, and will use Visual Edge’s Corba-based SAP and Tuxedo connectors to link those applications to its Orbix middleware and connect them to other programs. Iona is trying to differentiate itself in the EAI space by claiming that EAI is simply a feature of any platform middleware and that its value proposition is being able to offer what it claims is a ‘thin’ EAI solution with the Visual Edge products.

Meantime, Iona yesterday reported second quarter net income down 55% at $1.2m compared with $2.7m last time on revenue which rose 32% to $24.6m over $18.5m last time. Earnings per share were $0.06, five cents better than consensus estimates. At the half way mark net income down 84% at $722,000 compared with $4.7m on revenue which rose 26% to $45.74 from $36.05m. There was said to be much reveling in Dublin on the news.
