IONA AND OBJECT DESIGN TO INTEGRATE OBJECT REQUEST BROKER WITH OBJECT DATABASE IN TECHNOLOGY FIRST

By CBR Staff Writer

Ireland’s much-fancied object-oriented software technology king, Dublin-based Iona Technologies Ltd and Object Design Inc, Burlington, Massachusetts, will jointly integrate Iona’s Orbix Object Request Broker with Object Design’s ObjectStore object-oriented database. The two reckon that it is the first time an object database has been integrated with a Common Object Request Broker Architecture Object Request Broker and the development will result in a product designed for on-line back-up and recovery, distributed transactions and support for symmetric multiprocessing environments. The product, which is to be called Orbix-ObjectStore, will comprise access to Common Object Request Broker Architecture distribution services supported by Orbix and the ability to build complex object applications. The idea is essentially to enable Orbix Common Object Request Broker Architecture objects to be stored, managed and retrieved by ObjectStore, and to enable ObjectStore to invoke distributed Common Object Request Broker Architecture-based applications. It is expected to be released next year.
