This important project involves the complete replacement of the signalling on the line from Bethnal Green station through Hackney Downs to Enfield Town, Hertford and Stansted Airport, and will deliver better performance, and enable a future upgrade of capacity to and from the airport. The overall scheme has recently been rationalised from the original six stages to five, in order to shorten the overall project timescale, and secure efficient delivery of the scheme to Railtrack.

The new work will be carried out by the WARM Alliance that brings together Westinghouse Signals, AMEC SPIE Rail, GrantRail, Alfred McAlpine Civil Engineering and Railtrack. The first stages of the project are well advanced, with the first major commissioning in the Hackney Downs area scheduled for the late May Bank Holiday 2001. The scheme plans for the remaining stages have already been completed and the subsequent commissions are planned to bring the project to its conclusion in November 2003. The next stage will comprise the areas currently controlled from the signal boxes at Seven Sisters Junction and Enfield Town.

John Cotton, Managing Director of Westinghouse Signals Ltd, said: We are absolutely delighted with this substantial order. It shows Railtrack’s confidence in Westinghouse and the Alliance to deliver a vital improvement to their network. The WARM Alliance aims to become the preferred delivery vehicle for projects in Railtrack East Anglia. Railtrack East Anglian Investment Manager, Rufus Boyd, said: We have been very pleased with the way Westinghouse and the Alliance has tackled the work so far, and this has been a major factor in awarding them the remaining stages. This award also demonstrates Railtrack’s faith in using alliances as the way forward to deliver the major investments that the network requires.
