The Internet Society (ISOC), the collection of organizations that has traditionally organized the development of the internet and is increasingly facing competition from commercial interests, has selected nine officers to run the organization. The new chairman is Frode Greisen, the Danish managing director of Ebone Inc, which provides a backbone in Europe linking 76 Internet Service Providers in 32 countries. He will lead the organization as the arguments over who controls the domain name registration of the internet and other issues become increasingly heated and now involve the governments of the world. Griesen had been treasurer of the ISOC since 1994. The previous chairman Don Heath had combined that job with that of the president, which he still holds, but he was unavailable yesterday to explain his role further. Others elected by the ISOC’s board of trustees include new treasurer Christine Huitema, a chief scientist at Bellcore’s Internet Architecture Research Laboratory and Geoff Huston as secretary, who is responsible for the architecture and operation of Telstra’s internet service in Australia. ISOC’s founding president, co-inventor of TCP/IP and all-round internet heavyweight Vinton Cerf of MCI Communications Corp becomes VP in charge of chapters of the ISOC. There are five other appointees.
