International Data Corp has estim-ates of shares of the market for the major operating systems that are very similar to those from IBM given in yesterday’s OS/2 Show (CI No 1,292) – with some subtle diff-erences: for 1988, IDC puts MS-DOS and OS/2 together at 26%; all 370 at 24% (IBM said 26%9; Unix at 9% (IBM said 6%); VAX/VMS 5%; and SSP, CPF and OS/400 together at 3% (IBM said 4%), with others at 33%; IBM’s projections were for 1991, while IDC’s are for 1993, when it sees MS-DOS and OS/2 climbing to 29% – but again does not dare to split the two out; Unix at 19% – where IBM is going for 22% in 1991; all 370 at 19%; VAX/VMS at 6%, and OS/400 at 4% where IBM goes for on-ly 2% in 1991; others fall to 23%.
