Under the terms of the Blanket Purchasing Agreement, Intermec will supply fixed-mounted and transportable radio frequency identification (RFID) readers to support the Department of Defense(DoD) and the US Coast Guard. The contract is intended to assist the government in its Automatic Information Technology (AIT) RFID scheme, set up to provide asset visibility in its global logistics pipeline.

According to Intermec, the new award builds on its 20-year relationship with the US government. Last year, the company signed a five-year agreement to provide automatic identification technologies to all federal agencies and branches of the US DoD.

The Intermec contract is the second of five AIT RFID award groups resulting from a government request for quotation issued in December 2004. Subsequent award groups, to be announced throughout the year, will select vendors to provide RFID-enabled bar code printers, portable readers, software and implementation and integration services.

RFID, a complement to current bar code-based inventory and asset tracking systems, allows companies and organizations to automatically track inventory throughout a supply chain.
