Interactive Flight Technologies Inc is working with seven film distributors to offer airline passengers interactive films. Warner Brothers, MGM United Artists, Paramount, Turner Home Entertainment, EIM, Jaguar Distribution and Swank Worldwide will distribute films to the Las Vegas-based inflight entertainment company’s proprietary Inflight Entertainment Network. Movies available will cover a broad selection from old, new and classic releases. Passengers can select up to 30 digitised movies which they can start, pause, fast forward, rewind and stop at any time. The system consists of a cabin file server which distributes the movies to cluster controllers. The cluster controllers can serve 16 to 32 seats each. Each pair of seats has its own electronic seat box. Each passenger can start and stop a film at any time. Passengers have a 9.5 touch screen stored in the seat rest. There is the option of inflight gaming, played either for fun or by swiping a credit or debit card and gaming up to around ú20. Interactive Flight Technologies is now working on a version of its system for economy class seats. Alitalia is installing a version of the company’s system in first class seats on one of its MD-11 planes. Users will have a choice of 30 movies, without the gambling option. Alitalia said it may install the system on seven additional aircraft over the next three months.
