Intel Corp’s parting of the ways with VLSI Technology Inc on chip sets for handheld devices designed to run Microsoft Corp’s WinPad operating system is being seen as a big set-back for the camp that is betting on the Windows standard for hand-held devices, including Compaq Computer Corp; Intel and VLSI developed the Polar integrated 80386-based chip set but neither is now seeking new customers for the set, nor do they plan to support anyone not already committed to products based on Polar; Intel is now looking at the next generation and shrinking 80486s down to low-power levels suitable for Personal Digital Assistants; according to Infoworld, new new processor is code named Hummingbird, will offer less integration than the Polar chip, which integrates cache controller, graphics accelerator, and a liquid crystal diode display controller.
