Intellisync eyes BREW market with Tourmaline buy

Mobile middleware specialist Intellisync has extended its product range into mobile email based on Qualcomm's BREW platform with the acquisition of privately held Tourmaline Networks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

While Intellisync has its own goAnywhere wireless email product, Tourmaline gives it a valuable customer base among carriers using Qualcomm’s CDMA2000 technology.

Solana Beach, California-based Tourmaline offers software that supports POP, HTML, IMAP, Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino mail on more than 50 handsets. It has distribution agreements with 20 mobile operators including Verizon Wireless, US Cellular and Western Wireless.

Inspired by the success of the RIM BlackBerry, carriers see wireless email as an important priority and Intellisync now has a strong product portfolio in this space.
