Intelcom Group Inc of Denver and Southern California’s Edison Inc will ask the California Public Utilities Commission for permission for Intelcom to lease more than 1,200 route miles of existing fiber-optic facilities from the electricity company. Pending regulatory approval, the 25-year agreement would permit Intelcom’s ICG Access Services Inc subsidiary to use an additional 500 miles of conduit and poles owned by the Edison International subsidiary for fiber expansion. ICG has targeted some 1,300 commercial buildings to connect to its local exchange network over the next 18 months. Additionally, the utility’s 50,000 square mile service territory includes 4.3m customers in Central and Southern California, IntelCom said. The estimated market size of the serving area, which covers 14 counties and a combined population of 11m, is $3,200m in annual local exchange revenue, IntelCom said.
