Intel Corp is suing EMI Group North America Inc claiming $4.5m in malicious damages on the back of a failed 1995 court case that the Thorn-EMI subsidiary brought against it. Intel legal spokesperson, Chuck Malloy, said that four years ago the EMI Group North America, which Intel describes as a shell company, bought a patent portfolio and attempted to prove that Intel was infringing its patents. The case failed all the way down the line, according to Malloy. Nevertheless, it did go as far as the supreme court before being finally thrown out, leaving Intel with substantial legal bills, which it is now trying to recoup from EMI.
