Intel Corp says it is on track to ship some 30m 80486 chips this year, and fourth quarter chip sales to the computer industry should be especially strong, company officials said – The industry should enjoy a good fourth quarter, Intel vice-president Paul Otellini told a teleconference call following release of the company’s second quarter results (see pages one and seven); with all the good news, you might have expected that the shares would jump for joy – but if you did, you don’t know markets: the old maxim sell on a (gold or oil) strike applies equally to good figures that had been anticipated, and investors now reckon that there is nothing more to go for until the build-up to next quarter’s report so as the results matched, but did not exceed, forecasts, the shares actually tumbled $2.50 to $53.50.
