The moves follows Intel’s announcement that it would cut 1,000 jobs, or about 1% of its global workforce, from all geographic regions and business units, ranging from frontline to senior management.

Notable among its management changes is the appointment of EVP Sean Maloney, who previously co-managed Intel’s mobility unit, to head the chipmaker’s sales and marketing group, which oversees all products. Maloney also becomes Intel chief sales and marketing officer.

SVP Anand Chandrasekher loses his job as co-general manager of sales and marketing, and instead heads a newly created ultra-mobile PC business group.

Donald MacDonald moves up from being VP of the digital home group to VP of marketing and brands, reporting to Maloney.

SVP David Perlmutter will remain general manager of the mobility group. Eric Kim, the other co-manager of sales and marketing takes MacDonald’s old job in the digital home unit. Chandrasekher reports to Perlmutter.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel also said two senior executives would be retiring: William Siu, VP of Intel’s channel platforms group; and Richard Wirt, co-general manager of software and solutions.

Siu will not be replaced. Instead, the channel platforms group will report to Maloney in sales and marketing. Wirt’s replacement will be named later, Intel said.

As part of the thorough analysis of Intel begun in April, we have examined the focus and structure of our top management level, including our use of ‘two-in-a-box’ co-managers, said Intel chief executive Paul Otellini, in a statement. The moves announced today will help us speed decision making and bring new resources to bear in critical areas, while allowing me to spend more time on key strategic issues.
